NYSIM Welcomes New Health Professions Director

Laura Penalo, PhD, RN, CNL

NYSIM is excited to announce that Laura Penalo, PhD, RN, CNL, joined the NYSIM leadership team in December 2022 as Health Professions Director. Dr. Penalo has 20 years of experience in healthcare and 10 years of experi- ence in nursing simulations. Prior to joining NYSIM, she worked as a Nursing Assistant Professor and Simulations Liaison for The City University of New York BMCC School of Nursing, Simulations Coordinator for The Monroe College School of Nursing, and as an adult Medical-Surgical and Ambulatory Care Nurse at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Cornell. Dr. Penalo has expertise in quantitative and descriptive, qualitative research methodologies in simulation. She looks forward to collaborating with CUNY and NYU faculty and educators to design, implement, and evaluate simulation programs that promote learners’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, confidence, clinical decision making, and communication skills with the overarching goal of improving healthcare outcomes through effective team work, evidence-based practice, culturally congruent care, and adher- ence to quality and safety standards. Dr. Penalo is also joining Drs. Agnant and Pradhan in instructing NYSIM’s Fundamentals of Simulation Education (FUSE) course offered regularly on-site at NYSIM.

Dr. Penalo and the NYSIM leadership team will continue to ensure high-quality education and assessments while fostering an environment of continuous improvement, teamwork, communication, respect, diversity, and excel- lence.
